Goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore shuts the door on the NAIT Ooks
Edmonton, March 17, 2023 – Goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore and the Queens shutout the NAIT Ooks in Game 1 of the Championship Finals. Disotell-Dunsmore stopped all 22 shots that the Ooks put on the net.
It was definitely a final-like atmosphere as it was a tight-checking game to begin with, but the Queens would open up the scoring with four minutes left to go in the first period. Forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) led a two-on-one odd-man rush into the Ooks zone. Instead of passing it across to her teammate, she took the initiative to shoot and it paid off as it beat the NAIT goaltender for the first goal of this championship final series.
The period would end with the Queens up 1-0.
Forward Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) would make it 2-0 after the Queens won a puck battle along the boards in the Ooks end. Toews was able to take advantage of a loose puck in front of the net and scored her first of the playoffs.
No more scoring happened after the second period with the Queens taking Game 1 with a score of 2-0. Goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Bachelor of Science) earned herself a shutout in her first playoff game this year and she was awarded for her outstanding performance with the player of the game honour. This is her second shutout of the year with her first being against the Lakeland College Rustlers just over a month ago.
The Ooks outshot the Queens 22-15 at the end of the game. Red Deer could not capitalize on their only powerplay but were able to kill off all three of the man-advantages that they gave to NAIT.
Game 2 will go tomorrow night at 7 pm in Red Deer as the Queens will look to put the pressure on the Ooks.
