The Queens shutout the Rustlers, Sansom extends her scoring streak to seven games.

Red Deer, February 4, 2023 – After a shootout victory last night, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens shut out the Lakeland College Rustlers 2-0 in Red Deer.

The first period went scoreless but shots on goal favoured the hometown Queens as they outshot the Rustlers 10-8.

The Queens would strike early in the second period. Forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) extended her point streak to seven games with a goal just over two minutes into the period. Forward Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education) skated off the wall, sauced a pass to Sansom in the slot and would one-time the puck past the Rustlers goaltender for the early lead.

Forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) would extend the Queens lead to two. It was a one-on-one battle with her and the Lakeland College defender. Bablitz was able to wrist a shot near the top of the faceoff circle and find the top corner above the Rustlers goaltender's glove. This is Bablitz's fifth goal of the season and her 10th point.

At the end of the second period, the Queens continued to outshoot the Rustlers. The visiting team only got two shots in the period while facing 16 shots.

Like the first period, the third period would go scoreless and uneventful as goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Bachelor of Science) earned herself an 18-shot shutout and a win as the Queens completed their weekend with a 2-0 victory over the Rustlers.

Head Coach Kelly Coulter said the forecheck was the difference in tonights game.

"For about 40 minutes, the girls were solid on their forecheck and trying to keep them in their own zone. Both our goals were well-placed shots on a very good goaltender."

After Sansom extended her point streak to seven games, she was named the player of the game for the Queens. Forward Mackenzie Stafford was named the player of the game for the Rustlers.

The Queens will have a bye weekend next week with their next game coming on Friday, February 17 when they host the SAIT Trojans at 7 pm.

The Rustlers will play the Olds College Broncos in Lloydminster for two games starting on Friday at 7 pm.
