The Queens walk away with a shootout victory in Llodyminster
Lloydminster, February 3, 2023 – As the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team headed north to battle with the newly-added Lakeland College Rustlers, they were going to be put to the test as the Rustlers are coming off two wins against the NAIT Ooks, who are sitting in first place. The Ooks are a team the Queens have only beaten once in three games.
The Rustlers opened the scoring in their own building to go up 1-0.
But, forward Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education) tied the up game and scored her second goal of the season. Forward Arilyn Toews and defense Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) got the assists on the Queens first goal of the game.
Moments into the second period, forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) scored to take the Queens lead back. This would extend Sansom's point streak to six games. Forward Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology) got the lone assist on RDP's second goal of the game.
After the Rustlers tied it up, the two teams went to the dressing room for the last time tied at two. But the Queens were outshooting Lakeland College 30-23.
This game would need overtime. This happens to be the second time these two teams needed extra time to find a winner with the Rustlers winning that game 1-0. At the end of three periods, the Queens continued to outshoot Lakeland 41-27.
The first period of overtime went scoreless which meant another period was needed.
The biggest save of the game came in extra time as goaltender Izzy Palumbo robbed the Rustlers forward on a breakaway with her glove to give her team a chance to come home with a win.
After 20 minutes to play, the game needed a shootout and the Queens scored twice to win it 3-2.
Buttle scored the first goal and forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) scored the game-winning goal in the shootout.
These two teams will face off in a must-see rematch tomorrow evening at 7 pm in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
