The Granary Kitchen RDP Athlete of the Week for February 7, 2022

Chase Haygarth had a superb weekend for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team. The first-year student-athlete made significant contributions in the Kings’ two wins over the Portage College Voyageurs. He was instrumental on the Kings’ penalty kill, which stopped 10 of the Voyageurs’ 11 opportunities with the extra skater. Offensively, the Business Administration General student contributed four points over two games.

In Thursday’s 6-3 home victory, the five-foot-11 forward assisted on his team’s opening goal and then scored the fifth. Haygarth was named the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game for his outstanding performance.

Then in Saturday’s 6-3 road win, the former member of the Flin Flon Bombers scored his team’s fifth goal, which was shorthanded. He added an assist on the Kings’ sixth goal.

This season, Haygarth has played a significant role in the Kings’ 81.8 per cent success rate on the penalty kill, which ranks third in the league. His overall game continues to improve in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and he will be an important player for the Kings moving forward.
