The Queens make quick work of the Broncos, sweep the weekend
Red Deer, February 4, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens finished off their weekend with a commanding three-straight set victory over the Olds College Broncos.
Early on, the Queens had trouble receiving the Broncos serve. But they managed to figure out their serve receive and their game slowly improved from there. It started from their defense which moved forward into their offense and they did not look back as they were able to defeat the Broncos 25-14 in the first set. On the set-winning point, middle-blocker Kira Weddell (Bachelor of Science in Biological Science) got a kill as she wiped the hit off the Broncos single block.
The Queens used this commanding first-set victory to their advantage and took this momentum into the second set. They were able to take a five-point lead early on in the set into a timeout called by the Broncos. After some substitutions by Olds College, they managed to play some incredible defense to stay in the rally including some key blocks in a very long rally. The Queens clinched the second 25-20 after a service by the Broncos that was sent long and out of bounds.
After Olds College crawled back into the second set late, the Queens knew they had to come out of the gate fast in the third, which they did. They managed to take an 11-5 lead into the first timeout called by the Broncos in the set. Some amazing serves by setter Danielle Wiens (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) concluded the set and the Queens swept the Broncos in three straight games.
Head Coach Talbot Walton explained the girls are near their peaking point with championships just a couple of weeks away.
"We earned a lot of points tonight. Working around errors, we still a found a way to score 14-15 points a set, which is pretty considering how the scores turned out in the match. It was a really good performance from us today."
The Broncos player of the match went to middle-blocker Milan Schapowal (Veterinary Medical Receptionist), who played in all three sets and had three kills, four digs and three service aces.
The Queens player of the game went to outside-hitter Vanessa Loos (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology). She had five kills, seven aces and nine digs.
The Broncos will cap off their regular season with two North Division matches starting on Friday, February 10 at 6 pm as they take on The Kings University Eagles.
For the Queens, they will also finish off against two north teams at home starting on February 10 against the NAIT Ooks at 6 pm.
