The Queens struggle in Calgary, fall in four sets
Calgary, January 27, 2023 – In a battle between two teams that are tied in the South Division, the SAIT Trojans set themselves apart from the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens as they walked away with a 3-1 set victory in Calgary.
The Queens started the way they ended things last week with a very fast start as they jumped out to a 16-9 start before the Trojans called a timeout. RDP would continue their quick start after the timeout and would go on a 9-2 run to win the first set 25-11. Middle Kira Weddell (Bachelor of Science) was the one who finished off the set for the Queens after a beautifully placed ball off a tip gave them the 25th point.
But it was a much different set with the Trojans showing off their adversity and composure which led to a tight battle. The Trojans were able to find a big three-point lead in the second set and pulled away from the Queens late to take the game 25-20. The Trojans were able to find an opening through the block in which the Queens were not able to dig up the ball.
SAIT was able to use this set victory to their advantage and started very strong in the third set running away with a 12-5 lead early on in a crucial set for both teams. The Queens continued to struggle after both timeouts were called which would lead to a 25-13 set commanding victory by the Trojans. SAIT got their set point off a killing error by Red Deer which resulted in the ball going out the back and out of bounds.
After an impressive start to the match, the Queens struggled to find their offensive form. But late in the set, Weddell went on a serving streak which put her team within striking distance. That was not enough however as they would fall to the Trojans 25-18 in the final set to take the match 3-1 after a tip by the SAIT middle found the hardwood.
Right-side Syd Rix (Bachelor of Education) was named the player of the game for the Queens.
These two teams will face off in a rematch tomorrow night at 6 pm in Red Deer.
