The Queens Volleyball team return to the win column with a three set victory over the Lions

Calgary, January 21, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens looked to find their first win of the second semester after falling in their first three matches of the 2023 calendar year. Even though the Queens are hosting the ACAC Championships this year and are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, Head Coach Talbot Walton wants them to still be competing for every win so they can set themselves up for success come the end of February.

The Queens started the match out the same way they began last night's match with an early lead as they doubled up on the Lions going into the home team's timeout. After an ace by outside-hitter Vanessa Loos (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology), the Queens walked away with a dominant 25-15 opening set victory over a Lions team they had to fight to win every point and set last night.

Once again, the Queens doubled up on Ambrose before the first timeout of the second set. RDP sure shook off last night's tough five-set loss quickly and came out on all cylinders tonight. With that loss 24 hours ago, the Queens fell out of a playoff spot for the first time in the season. Ambrose stayed in it and battled right until the set point. But it was the visitors that came away with the 25-19 second set victory after middle Kira Weddell (Bachelor of Science) tipped it to an open spot on the court.

The Queens were not letting up on this Lions team tonight. The visitors were playing their best volleyball of the semester and were not letting the Lions back into it. Ambrose did not have a lead of any sort in the three sets that played, which meant a straight-set victories for the Queens. Veteran Sydney Rix (Bachelor of Education) got the honor to kill it for the Queens as they would split their weekend series with the Lions.

The player of the game for the Queens went to setter Dani Wiens (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology), who really put together a good game plan for her offense and helped her team to a sweep of the Lions.

RDP will be back in action next week for a two-game set against the SAIT Trojans. The first match will be in Calgary at 6 pm before they are back home on Saturday to finish off their weekend against the Trojans.
