The Queens swept by the Huskies on the road

Fort McMurray, November 18 - The Keyano College Huskies snuck away with a win in Fort McMurray in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) volleyball action on Friday night against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.

The Queens travelled up north well-rested after having this past weekend off and only having one match the weekend of November 4. The Huskies came into this match only dropping six sets so far which came against the nationally ranked Lakeland College Rustlers, who the Queens will play tomorrow night.

The Huskies took a 17-12 lead into a timeout called by Head Coach Talbot Walton. The hometown team really showed why they were near the top of the North Division of the ACAC with a great offense and amazing defense to stop the Queens tall net presence.

Red Deer Polytechnic just could not find their offense as they were stopped many times by the Huskies block. The Queens battled back within four points forcing the Huskies to call a timeout. But Keyano College ultimately came out of their timeout and won three of the next four points to take the first set 25-19.

The Queens continued their struggles in the second set and the home team took at 18-7 lead into Walton's first timeout of the game. This set featured a hard-fought rally in which the Huskies took the point after the Queens could not get it over the net. But during this rally, the Red Deer women kept themselves in it with not one, but two desperation saves. It was not enough as the Huskies ruled over the Queens with a 25-11 victory.

In a much better set for the Queens, they found themselves down just by three before Walton called his first timeout. It was definitely not Red Deer's best set, but the Queens still managed to fight and forced a fourth set. The Huskies came out of the timeout with a force to be reckoned with and stop the Queens offense and were able to come away with a few kills of their own to extend their lead.

The play coming out of the Queens final timeout, the Huskies made an unbelievable diving dig which led to a kill out of the middle for a 23-13 lead enroute to a 25-14 third set victory. The Huskies would sweep the visiting Queens 3-0.

Setter Danielle Wiens was named the Queens player of the match as she called the RDP offence and tried to find her way through the Huskies defense.

As stated earlier, the Queens will visit the Rustlers at 6 pm tomorrow night. Catch it live on ACACTV.
