The Queens earn a victory in Edmonton, Lajeunnesse scores two

Edmonton, February 24, 2023 – With the win tonight, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens tied the NAIT Ooks for first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

It was a quick start for the home team as they would score just under four minutes in with a goal from forward Charlieze Sallis (Personal Fitness Trainer) to give her team the first lead of the game.

The Queens would not get on the board until the halfway point of the schedule with their veteran Avery Lajeunnesse (Bachelor of Education) scoring her seventh goal in the season. The assist went to goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) who was not the only goaltender from Red Deer who picked up a point in the victory. Kings goaltender Arik Weersink (Business Administration) also picked up an assist in tonight's game against the Concordia University Thunder.

The Ooks would regain their lead with a goal from fourth-year Bre Martin (Bachelor of Technology) three minutes after the Queens goal.

Lajeunnesse would pick up her second goal of the game late in the second period to tie it as they head off to the third period.

For most of the final frame of the game, it was very quiet as both teams were deadlocked at two fighting to find that go-ahead goal. The Queens would capitalize on a powerplay with five minutes left to go in the period. Defense Kassy Gaudette (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) would score the goal on the man-advantage with help from forwards Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology) and Madison Sansom (Social Work). With this assist, Sansom would extend her point streak to 10 games but her consecutive goal streak would fall apart at six games.

The Queens would head back home with an incredible 3-2 hard-fought victory. With this win the Queens are now tied with the Ooks in the standings and will look to jump into first place tomorrow night in Red Deer at 7 pm.
