Queens win, sweep the season series against the Trojans
Calgary, February 18, 2023 – In a rematch of last night's game between the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and the SAIT Trojans, the visiting Queens would make it five wins in a row with a final score of 4-0 as they swept the weekend and season series.
At the end of the first period, the Trojans would hold the Queens scoreless in the first period for the second game in a row, but it remained tied at zero after the first 20 minutes.
But 30 seconds into the second this would all change. Queens forward Brenna Reid (Bachelor of Kinesiology) lifted a stick of a Trojans player in the neutral zone which led to a partial breakaway. Reid would fire a wrist shot and it would trickle past goaltender Kaylin Schellenberg for a 1-0 RDP lead.
The Queens would add to their lead with a deflection goal from the point. Defense Kiera Mulder (Bachelor of Kinesiology) shot the puck from the blue line and with Molly Flynn's (Bachelor of Nursing) great hand-eye-coordination, she was able to tip the puck mid-air past the Trojans goaltender for their second goal of the game.
The goals just kept coming for the Polytechnic in the second period as forward Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) would score the Queen's third goal of the game with 21 seconds to go in the frame.
At the end of the second period, the Queens were outshooting the Trojans 32-10.
Forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) opened the third period scoring as she scored for the sixth straight game and extended her point streak to nine games.
The Queens would win and shut out the Trojans 4-0. Forward Molly Flynn was awarded the player of the game. Goaltender Izzy Palumbo saved 18 shots for her third shutout of the season.
The Polytechnic will be back in action next week Friday when they head off to Edmonton to take on the first-place NAIT Ooks. Catch the game live on ACACTV.
