The Queens shocked by Broncos with a loss in Olds

Olds, January 26, 2023 – On this rare Thursday night, it was a battle of two Central Alberta teams as the Olds College Broncos play host to the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.

These two teams have only played just one up until tonight with the Queens walking away with a 3-0 victory as goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) steered aside 16 saves for the shutout.

Red Deer sits in second with the Broncos in fourth, but they were able to pick up a couple of points in two games against a very strong NAIT Ooks team who are in first place in the conference.

After Queens goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Bachelor of Science) thought she had the puck in her gear, Broncos defense Ali Macaulay (Business Management) jumped on the loose puck on the goal line to open the scoring.

The Broncos kept the pressure on with their second goal of the game a few minutes later. Defense Keera Tiringer (Agriculture Management Production) would drive from the blue line and beat a Queens defender before back-handing the puck over the shoulder of Disotell-Dunsmore for a highlight reel goal to give her team a two-goal cushion.

With 30 seconds to go, the Queens would cut the Broncos lead in half. Defense Alesha Santos (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) sent a puck in from the blue line and was guided into a wide-open net by defense Jordyn McLaughlin (Bachelor of Kinesiology). This is McLaughlin's second goal in as many games and with Santos' fifth assist on the season she has now four points in her past four games.

In a period that looked like it was going to end scoreless, the home-town Broncos extended their lead back to two on an odd-man rush into the Queens zone. Tiringer would lead the rush into the offensive zone would lay off a pass to teammate Avery Kendall (Sports Management), who would juke out Disotell-Dunsmore and guide the puck just out of the reach of the pad of the Queens goaltender.

Even though they were down by two at the end of the second period, Red Deer still outshot their opponent 21-12.

On a five-on-three powerplay, the Queens struck again as forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) cuts in from the boards and rips a wrister top shelf from the top of the faceoff circle.

But Olds would get a powerplay goal of theirs to regain their two-goal lead. After going unmarked in front of the net, forward Sydney Jack (Business Management) jumped on a loose puck and would fire it home for the Broncos fourth goal of the game.

The Queens suffered their second straight loss after falling 4-2 to the Broncos. These two teams will faceoff again on Saturday night in Red Deer at 7 pm.

Red Deer's Madison Sansom was named the player of the game for the Queens.
