Reid scores her first, Dunsmore records shutout as Queens drop Broncos

Red Deer, AB - Two first-year members of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens made their mark Thursday evening.
A game winning goal from Queens rookie Brenna Reid coupled with a shutout from first-year goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore helped the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens blank the Olds College Broncos 3-0 at home.
Both teams played well defensively over the first and second periods, giving up few grade A scoring opportunities.
"Olds did a good job of keeping our shots away from the net. The first two periods we didn't have a lot of shots," said Kelly Coulter, Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey Head Coach of his team's 14 shots over 40 minutes. "It's tough to score goals when you're not getting a lot of pucks to the net. They do a really good job of blocking shots, so it's really tough to generate offence when they're doing that."
The RDP Queens finally broke the stalemate at 12:05 of the third period. Queens forward Arilyn Toews caught the Broncos on a line change and fed Edmonton's Brenna Reid who made no mistake past Broncos goaltender Cheyenne Jamieson's blocker.
"I was going down two-on-one and my partner just passed me the puck and I just sniped it in the top corner and it felt really good," said Reid of her first goal in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). "I looked up and I had time, so I picked my spot and ripped it. I was really excited."

With Reid's solid work ethic, Coulter felt she would be rewarded on the scoresheet.
"I thought that line used their speed most of the night. Brenna scored a really nice goal and she works hard all the time," said Coulter. "Hard work equals reward and success. It's not surprising to me that she got that goal."
Then 53 seconds later, Prince George's Braxtyn Shawara raced up the right side and beat Jamieson on the short side to push the Queens up 2-0. Alesha Santos, a Bachelor of Science Nursing student, picked up her second assist of the contest.
On the power play, the Queens went up by a trio. On a goal mouth scramble, second-year Braxtyn Shawara shoveled the puck behind Jamieson with 14 seconds left on the clock. Prince Albert's Alli Soyko and Calgary's Mary Hirsch recorded the assists.

"Thankfully in the third period, we were able to put some in the net," said Coulter. "We started to get rewarded and thankfully our veteran players were able to step up and put the puck in the net."
It was Disotell-Dunsmore's first conference win and shutout in the ACAC.
She was recognized as the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game, turning aside all 25 shots.

"Tanya is really calm. She is very agile and does a good job fighting to find pucks around the net area," said Coulter of the five-foot-three netminder. "She's a smaller player but she works hard to grab those pucks in those scrambles. Each goalie brings something different and I'm really happy for her for how hard she's worked to play her first college game."
Jamieson received the top player honour for the Broncos, making 24 saves.
Olds College went zero-for-four on the power play. Red Deer Polytechnic connected once on five tries.
The RDP Queens have a few injuries on defence so forward Monica Bowtell moved back to the blueline.
The Olds College Broncos (1-1-0) will be back in action on Thursday, November 25 when they host the NAIT Ooks (1-0-0) at 7 pm.
On Friday, November 26, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (1-1-0) will challenge the SAIT Trojans (0-1-0) in Calgary at 7 pm.
