The Queens score 105 points, make it 11 in a row

Grande Prairie, February 11, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens scored 100-plus points and route the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves to extend their impressive winning streak to 11 games.

The Queens start their bid to extend their winning streak to 11 games with a 10-2 run to open up the first quarter in Grande Prairie. RDP sure had their offense rolling in the first quarter against a Wolves team whose season has been a rough road with just one win in their 17 games played. At the end of the quarter and after the Queens exploded for 24 points, they led the Wolves 24-8. It was another team effort with multiple players contributing to their early successes in the first quarter.

The Wolves would put up a fight in the second quarter as halfway through the frame, they already doubled their first-quarter score. They finally solved the Queens defense. But that did not stop the Queens offense from producing as they scored 18 points in the first five minutes. Before the half, the Wolves offense hit a rut and just could not solve the Queens defense. They scored 13 points in the first five minutes but zero in the final five. With 36 seconds to go, Head Coach Avery Harrison and his team had a scare as guard Amy Szymanek (Bachelor of Education) went down awkwardly for a few minutes but would walk off on her own. RDP took a 59-21 lead into the locker room. Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) led her team with 16 points, but Swedish-guard Sophie Melin (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) was not far behind her with 15.

To start the second half, the Queens had their lowest scoring quarter with just 21 points dropped. That's not saying much however as they have scored 20 points or more in this game up to this point. RDP had their offense working on all cylinders and it wasn't just one player leading the way as eight of their nine players had four or more points. They would lead the Wolves 80-33 as they entered the final quarter.

Nothing new happened in the fourth as the same offense exploded for 20-plus points which gave them first 100-point game of the season as they doubled up on the Wolves with a final score of 105-40.

Guard Sophie Melin was named the Queens player of the game with 25 points, eight assists and eight steals.

The Queens will conclude their season with their toughest opponent yet as they take on the nationally ranked Concordia University Thunder next Friday at 6 pm in Red Deer.
