The Queens extend their winning streak to nine games

Olds, February 4, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens extended their winning streak to nine games with a commanding 87-49 victory over the Olds College Broncos in Olds.

It was a fast start for the Queens offensively. But as the quarter moved on the Broncos found their form and were able to slow down the offense from their opponent, which let the home team crawl back into the game. But nearing the end of the quarter, RDP picked up the offense once again and extended their lead as they head into the second quarter. They were up 18-11 at the quarter break.

After going on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, the Broncos called a timeout hoping to slow down the impressive Queens offense that Red Deer and surrounding areas have seen lately, specifically in last night's comeback win in the fourth quarter. The Broncos finally ended their scoreless streak just before the five-minute mark but not before RDP added nine more points to this incredible run. At the half, the Queens managed to hold onto a 16-point lead with a score of 38-22. Guard Amy Szymanek (Bachelor of Education) led her team with 14 points after two quarters.

Halfway through the quarter, it was a very close, defensive game and the Queens still managed to hold a 16-point lead. But with minutes to go in the third, RDP's offense kicked into a new gear and extended their lead. This was a gear that was not evident last night as the Queens struggled in the two middle quarters. But came out strong tonight and outscored the Broncos 22-13 in the third.

The Queens were able to keep the energy going into the final 10 minutes of the game and walk away with an 87-49. A few weeks ago, Head Coach Avery Harrison explained that if the team win's every quarter, they will win the game and they did just that tonight as they nearly doubled the Broncos in their own gym.

The player of the game went to guard Heena Sidhu (Bachelor of Arts in Political Science), who had 13 points and six assists on the night.

The Queens will head on the road next week when they take on the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton starting at 6 pm.
