Red Deer Polytechnic to host the 2024 CCAA Women's Volleyball Championship

Red Deer, February 7, 2023 – Red Deer Polytechnic has won the bid to host the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Volleyball National Championship. Red Deer Polytechnic, which is a member of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and CCAA, will host the prestigious event in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from March 6-9, 2024.

"Red Deer Polytechnic is thrilled to host the Women's Volleyball National Championship in 2024 and welcome Canada's top teams to our amazing facilities," says Stuart Cullum, President of Red Deer Polytechnic. "Building on our institution's success in hosting the 2019 Men's Volleyball National Championship, RDP is well-positioned to host the event and we are excited to showcase our outstanding Queens Volleyball program on the national stage."

The championship games will be held in the Fas Gas – On the Run Gymnasium, which is located within the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on the Polytechnic's Main Campus. This multi-purpose venue has a seating capacity of 1,200.

The tournament will feature five conference champions from across Canada, as well as two wild card teams and the host Red Deer Polytechnic Queens. The Polytechnic previously hosted the CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championships in 1980 and 1987.

As Queens Head Coach Talbot Walton reflects on the excitement of four years ago when RDP hosted the CCAA Men's Volleyball Championships, he gets goosebumps thinking about hosting the Women's Volleyball National Championship next season.

"The country saw the event we put on, what we had to offer here, and the level of support that we received through the community," he says. "For this group of student-athletes, it is going to be a massive opportunity for them as they play in nationals and gain that experience which will benefit the program for years to come."

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball program has won a total of 20 CCAA medals, including three national gold, nine silver and eight bronze. The Queens earned back-to-back national bronze medals in 2020 and 2022. The 2021 CCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Queens will be in action this weekend as they take on the NAIT Ooks on Friday, February 10 at 6 pm and will follow this up with a match against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Saturday at 1 pm.
