RDP Queens mystify MSVU Mystics with sweep, advance to national semi-finals

Charlottetown, PEI – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens have advanced to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Volleyball National Semi-finals.

Utilizing a balanced attack, the RDP Queens won in straight sets over the Mount St. Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics, Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) champions, in a CCAA quarter-final (25-19, 25-19 and 25-16).

Setter Emma Letkeman effectively varied the Queens' offensive attack. The second-year from Victoria found outside hitters Jadyn Leong, Tess Pearman, Anna Carlson and middle Sydney Rix early and the Queens jumped out to an 8-1 edge. The Mystics chipped away and pulled within two points (15-17), but back-to-back kills from Rix helped RDP expand its lead. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens eventually earned a 25-19 decision.

The Queens held a slight 6-5 edge in the second set and then went on a 6-1 run to pull ahead 12-6. An ace from Carlson helped the Polytechnic maintain that six point margin (19-13). The Queens kept the pressure on and middle McKenna Olson capped off a 25-19 decision.

The Mystics held their only lead of the match in the third set (12-10), but the Queens persevered. Service aces from Pearman and Olson sparked a rally. Rix continued her strong play from the middle and Olson sealed a 25-16 win. 

Red Deer's Rix, a Bachelor of Education Middle School student, was named the Queens Player of the Game. Rix contributed 10 kills, one ace, one block and a dig.

Pearman stacked up a match high 11 kills (0.304 hitting percentage). Leong and Olson chipped in with eight kills apiece for the Polytechnic. Letkeman had 36 assists and libero Kaylee Domoney recorded 10 digs and two assists. Olson had five of the Queens' 10 service aces. 

MSVU picked up three aces as a team. 

Third-year libero Becca MacDonnell received the top player honour for the Mystics, accumulating 14 digs and five assists.

Marcy MacNeil and Madyson Parlee led the Mystics with seven kills each. MSVU setter Lis Rhymes had 24 assists.

The CCAA Women's Volleyball All-Canadian team was announced and RDP outside hitter Carlson and MSVU setter Rhymes made the prestigious squad.

In a CCAA semi-final, the RDP Queens will face the VIU Mariners (PACWEST wildcard) on Saturday, March 26 at 3 pm MDT. The Mariners downed the Lynx d'Edouard-Montpetit (Reseau du sport etudiant du Quebec champions) in four sets in their quarter-final.
